Hockey Day in Canada is celebrating hockey's unofficial holiday across Canada, which usually centers around an annual special broadcast to celebrate the game in Canada that includes features all afternoon, leading up to a tripleheader of NHL action featuring the six Canadian teams (Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vancouver Canucks). This years event was held in Stratford, Ont.
Here is the opening montage from January 30th, 2010 Hockey Day in Canada Opening Montage
As a family we celebrated our 2nd Hockey Day in Canada this Saturday. My son had an early morning practice at 7:15 AM to kick start the day. Is there a better way to start the big day? When you think about it, that is probably one of the most popular memories any hockey player has, the early morning practice.
From there we enjoyed the games on CBC, as I cheered for the Habs against the Sens and my son cheered for the Sens. He officially cheers for anyone who is playing against the Habs. Probably a smart move on his part. :-)
So this is where Hockey Day, turned into Hockey Weekend for us. On Sunday, my son played in his 2nd IP Jamboree. It's an event where all the teams from the area for the IP age level get together and play 2 mini games. The games are 24 mins. long and with 3 mins. shifts. The jamboree is a great way to introduce the young players to a game format and it is great fun to watch them try and figure out the game and their bodies.
Here are some clips from the event and my little guy is number #11 on the Flyers (orange):
Now you would think with all the pictures and video we would catch his first official goal, well his Daddy missed it. Oh well, it was an end to end rush, he deked out three players and put it top shelf under the bar. :-) You will never know the difference.
It was another great event and tons of fun for the players and families involved.
What did you do for Hockey Day in Canada? Please share in the comments.
While Kopitar’s points have trailed off into oblivion, secondary scoring has kicked into high gear. Here we’ll break down the games and make some observations about FSN’s TV advertising. Question of the Day: if you got a new jersey for Christmas, what player would be on the back?
All grown up and having just turned 30 I don't actually remember a time when I didn't like hockey. I used to love sitting with my dad as he told stories of when he played junior hockey and how if it wasn't for a blatant slashing across his knees from a hated member of the opposing team he would have made it to the big show. His stories of how he loved playing defence and punishing opposing forwards that entered into his zone with devastating hip checks always had me smiling. My fathers stories of his playing days would spark my hockey interest and my love of the game would begin to grow.
My parents couldn't afford to put me in league hockey during my youth but this didn't stop my father from teaching me to skate or how to stick handle, perform a wrist shot or wind up and let go with a booming slapshot. Growing up in Canada helped as well since there was always a game of street hockey to be played somewhere in the neighborhood. Hockey was just something that everyone I knew growing up just did; whether they played or watched or talked about it, hockey was everywhere. My father was and still to this day is a die hard Maple Leafs fan and is still disappointed with the fact that I am an Oilers fan. Growing up in the 80's and in Alberta you couldn't help but recognize that the greatest player to have ever played the game was winning Stanley Cups and setting NHL records in Edmonton. The Oilers and Gretzky were at the height of their popularity in Alberta and as a kid I naturally followed the winning team. To my fathers credit he never once tried to persuade me to be a Leafs fan and allowed me to choose my own NHL team to follow. The seeds of love for hockey that my father had planted had now blossomed into obsession as my room wall were littered with hockey posters, hockey cards were scattered around my bedroom floor and I had Oiler pajamas, hats and t-shirts to wear daily. I was a hockey fan and there was no turning back.Fast forward to my mid 20's and I'm now mar
ried to wonderful woman who's only serious flaw is she doesn't like hockey, doesn't follow it and doesn't like how much of it I watch. Naturally the only solution to this problem would be to convert her into a hockey loving Oiler fan.
Skillful negotiations took place during hockey season where I would trade a watching a Hockey Night In Canada game with her for sitting and not complaining once while watching the latest chick flick she wanted to see. While watching the games I would explain some of the rules to her, point out the big hits, goals and saves and most of all I introduced her to Don Cherry. Coach's Corner was something she really enjoyed watching as Cherry's over the top suits and louder than life opinions really got her interested in the sport.
Little by little and hit by hit she became a hockey fan and more importantly an Oiler fan. Skip ahead to the Oilers Cup run in 2006 and there she was sitting beside me cheering as loud as I was for the Edmonton Oilers to defeat the Hurricanes and bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada where it rightfully belongs. My wife had become a full blown hockey fan who was now cheering loud enough during a game to actually wake up our new son...
Fast forward again, this time to 2009 and my son who is now 4 and is the reason I now love hockey as much as I ever did. He loves watching hockey and is proud of the fact he has socks with the Oilers logo on them and he calls them his hockey socks, he has his own jersey which he wears quite often. I take him skating at least once a week and am amazed at how quickly he has picked it up. I have been working with him to teach him a wrist shot and the slapshot much in the same way my father taught me so many years ago. Watching my own son now as he attempts a slapshot and misses fills me with so much joy, pride and love for him that it actually scares me. I often wonder if this is how my dad felt as he watched me? Next year he will be in TimBits hockey and watching him experience hockey for the first time is why I am still a hockey fan. It's not that I don't love the NHL and my Oilers regardless of their standings. It's just that now watching my own child play the game evokes a stronger feeling and love for the game than even a Oilers Cup win ever could.
Bio: I am a married father of two with a third on the way who loves the NHL and all things hockey. I am a die hard Oilers fan who bleeds copper and blue for the team. You can find out more about me on my personal blog: http://chadegeland.com
Hey, guys, Ozzy here. Most people that'll read this know that I'm a Devils fan, but not an obnoxious one. (I heard that! There is so such a thing!)
But I had some time to get back into the game after my daughter, The Typhoon, has grown up a bit. And that's where the problem starts....
*Sigh*
The Typhoon is a Penguins fan.
I know, I know. I've spent many nights awake wondering where I've gone wrong as a parent to let something like this happen. And I don't know. Have I not spent enough time with her? Does she not feel loved enough? Is this a cry for help?
She loves Malkin. She thinks Crosby is great, too. SHE THINKS FLEURY IS BETTER THAN MARTY.
And to make things worse, now that she's playing hockey (her first season), we wanted to help her out and get her into a camp so she can get some extra time on the ice. Guess who sponsors the thing? Crosby and the Pens.
For f*$#'s sake.
What's next? Will the twins be Ranger fans or something?
Of course, it could be worse. At least she's not a Wings fan....
